Why I joined Emmes

Emmes seemed like the kind of place where I could be a continual learner. It actually surpassed my expectations.

How I describe our firm to other people

I talk about what we do: We work with scientists to help develop and execute clinical research. Ultimately, what we do brings better treatments to people all over the world. I also tell people that we emphasize the collaborative nature of research and that our culture reflects this spirit of collaboration.

How I chose my career

I thought I wanted to be a doctor until I had my first experience dissecting a frog. I ended up majoring in biostatistics in graduate school and found that it was the perfect marriage of science and math. Then I ended up at Emmes, whose work is really the perfect marriage of medical science and research.

The best compliment I’ve ever received about Emmes

I’m fortunate because as president and CEO, I get to hear from a lot of our clients. What I love to hear is that their Emmes colleagues are true partners. And that we’re not just do-ers but thinkers.

My favorite moment at work

When I get to see our employees receive awards or get recognition at scientific meetings.

My background

I started at Emmes in 1982. At that time, the company only had 15 employees. I was recruited by a good friend from graduate school, Don Stablein. I figured if he was that positive about the company, then I needed to join him. And he was right! Eventually, Don became our CEO and then in 2013, I succeeded him in that role. I’ve been so fortunate to have had a wonderful mentor and to have been a Principal Investigator on projects addressing disease areas ranging from oncology to ophthalmology. I’ve had the privilege of serving as a reviewer for the National Institutes of Health and as chairperson of several Data and Safety Monitoring Committees. I was president and a member of the board of directors for the Society for Clinical Trials. I still feel energized because I’m learning new things almost every day.
