About Us

NICHD

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the primary Federal agency for conducting and supporting medical research.

The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), an institute within the NIH, was initially established to investigate the broad aspects of human development as a means of understanding developmental disabilities, including mental retardation, and the events that occur during pregnancy. Today, the Institute conducts and supports research on all stages of human development, from preconception to adulthood, to better understand the health of children, adults, families, and communities.

The FAZST study is being conducted through the Epidemiology Branch of the Division of Intramural Population Health Research (DIPHR), within the NICHD, which conducts research to identify risk factors for reproductive health outcomes. An area of particular interest within the Epidemiology Branch is the prevention of infertility and spontaneous abortions.

Enrique F. Schisterman, Ph.D., and Sunni L. Mumford, Ph.D. are the project officers for FAZST.
